The machine price is visible early in the buying process. Many of the costs that determine whether the project works appear later: tooling, freight preparation, unloading, electrical work, dust collection, compressed air, installation, training, maintenance, and the production time needed to bring the machine into service.
A total-cost review does not need to predict every future expense exactly. Its purpose is to identify the cost categories, owners, assumptions, and open questions before the purchase becomes a project deadline.
Start with the delivered configuration
Define the exact machine being priced. Record:
- Manufacturer, model, voltage, phase, and configuration
- Standard equipment included in the quoted price
- Selected options and accessories
- Tooling included with the machine
- Controls, software, and licenses
- Packaging and shipping dimensions and weight
- Warranty documentation
- Services expressly included or excluded
A product image may show optional tables, feeders, tooling, guards, controls, or accessories. Compare the written configuration, not only the photograph.
If multiple models are under consideration, give each one the same cost worksheet. A lower base price can reverse position after the required options and site work are included.
Tooling and workholding
Many machines need application-specific tooling before they can produce a finished part. Depending on the equipment, the list may include:

The machine’s listed footprint is only the beginning. Budget for:

Plan a startup period with realistic output expectations. Early parts may require additional inspection, tool adjustment, and process refinement.
Maintenance, wear items, and spare parts
Use the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule to identify recurring work and supplies:

A manufacturer warranty may cover only defined parts or remedies. It may exclude labor, travel, freight, diagnostics, removal, reinstallation, wear, misuse, incorrect utilities, or unauthorized repair.
Before purchase, review:

- Registration or startup requirements
- Parts, labor, travel, and freight treatment

- Required diagnosis and documentation
- Exclusions and maintenance obligations

Labor, throughput, and changeover
The financial effect of a machine depends on how it changes the work. Consider:
